Whiteburn's Wanderings

One man's wanderings backpacking around Scotland plus the odd digression

MacDui

Wandering up Glen Lui just before lunchtime musing of where to head; no wind, -3C, it felt good to be out in the mountains again.

I’d nearly missed the opportunity having not being watching the weather forecast that closely; two whole days of low temperatures & light winds; 1 ½ hrs to pack an overnight sack & head for the hills; by the time I got to the Linn of Dee half the day was over.

I’d decided to head for the Loch Avon with the idea of pitching up at the west end & then taking a trip over Cairngorm & Ben MacDui the next day.  I reached the Hutchison Bothy at 3:45 & called in to say hello.

Well by the time I’d had a short natter it was dark outside; wander over the hill to Loch Avon & spend 14 hrs in the tent or enjoy the coal fire & some company in the bothy?  The bothy won, we did get another couple arrive later but with only 6 in the small bothy it wasn’t crowded (I believe the record is 12) & no-one snored!

I was up & away up the hill towards Loch Etchachan not long after first light, quite a sharp morning with the temperature below -5C but no wind.  I was rewarded for the early-ish start by the sunrise lighting up the snow slopes of Carn Etchachan & Ben MacDui with a pink glow.

The view down Glen Lui from Coire Sputan Dearg was as equally rewarding.

Had a brew stop on the top of Ben MacDui & was surprised to have the spot to myself; despite the weather there was no hoards tromping the plateau from the ski station.

I reversed my route down to the head of Allt Clach nan Taillear before swing south towards Carn a’ Mhaim, probably one of the best ridgelines in the ‘gorms.

The Carn a’ Mhaim ridge provided a spectacular view back north, sometimes it’s worth looking over the shoulder.

All that was left was to wander the 10km or so back to the car; another enjoyable sojourn in the mountains completed.

Nice one, Paul! Stuck at home with a filthy cold so couldn’t get out myself.

Beautiful pictures, Paul. How is your knee doing?

The knee worked OK, just the odd twinge. The exercises prescribed by the physio seemed to have helped a lot, something to do with the knee caps being out of place.

Glad to hear. Still trying to sort mine out.
