Montane Slipstream Smock

This is one of go to items on my packing list for ALL seasons, the smock just does what it says it does; it’s very windproof, yet very breathable; and keeps me dry through showers to the point of wearing waterproofs is omitted except for continuous rain.

The Pertex Quantum GL fabric is very lightweight and does look a bit like a bin bag but after a year’s backpacking it shows no sign of wear and tear.  The smock weighs in at 80g and that works out to about £1/ g so not the cheapest of garments but if it was lost or destroyed I’d immediately go & buy another.

Why use a windproof?

Most walkers and backpackers will normally just carry a waterproof shell and use this as a windproof; I’ve used a variety of jackets over the years and found none equal the breathability of the Slipstream so ended up very sweaty trudging up a steep hill.

Manufacturers seem to continuously want to sell us the next magic fabric, at some inflated price.  I have a theory that when it’s continuously raining no fabric can breathe to any degree (100% humidity on the outside = 100% humidity on the inside), so why spend £’00’s chasing nirvana.  When it’s raining I’ll don my cheapo (£70) Mammut Pre-Cip jacket and stray dry and the pit zips help far more than any fabric’s breathability.

Note: The product was purchased with my own money and I have no connection with the manufacturer or distributors.
